Acid Reflux

Acid reflux is a very upsetting condition. One of the more common digestive problems, it is also commonly described as heartburn. People of all ages can develop acid reflux. Symptoms of acid reflux include a horrible burning feeling in the upper chest. Some people opt to ignore their acid reflux symptoms, but this is not a good idea because help is available. (On the other hand, many people get acid reflux from time to time but do not have what doctors would consider a chronic condition.)

Acid Reflux Foods

If you eat a heavy meal full of rich food and/or food that is very acidic, this can be problematic, especially if you have a tendency to develop acid reflux. If you have a tendency to develop acid reflux, you may want to avoid fried food altogether, as fried food is one of the biggest culprits when it comes to developing acid reflux. Chocolate can also be a big problem for some people with acid reflux.

Acid Reflux Treatment

A lot of people who are trying to take good care of themselves eat a lot of fruits and vegetables, and generally speaking, this is a good idea. However, for people with acid reflux, there are certain fruits and veggies that are best avoided. These include citrus fruits (like oranges and grapefruits) and tomatoes, cauliflower and broccoli, because all of these are quite high in acid content, and as you can well imagine, acidic foods are best avoided for individuals with this chronic condition. Fatty foods like red meat can also be problematic, as can certain spices like hot pepper. Caffeine can cause acid reflux problems too, so it’s best to steer clear of coffee and tea whenever possible. If you can eliminate them completely, that is ideal.

Fortunately, there are some foods that can actually help reduce acid reflux. One such food is ginger. If you don’t currently use ginger as one of your primary cooking ingredients, you may want to start now. In addition to cooking with more ginger, you will want to see your doctor if your acid reflux or heartburn symptoms persist over time because there are some medical treatments that can be of use to you. Each individual is different and is unique medical needs, so there is no “one size fits all” approach to the treatment of acid reflux. Your doctor knows your specific medical history and can design an acid reflux treatment plan around your particular needs.
