Cleats Options

When you first set out to buy cleats, you might be a bit overwhelmed by just how large a cleat selection there is at many sporting goods stores. All sporting goods stores carry cleats as part of their standard inventory, so you should not have difficulty finding cleats, though they might be out of your size or a particular brand at any given time. Sometimes you can find cleats at other types of retailers, but you will definitely find the largest selection at sporting goods stores such as Dick’s.

It’s important to be sport-specific when you go to buy cleats, since many different sports require you to wear them, but they are designed slightly differently for each sport. For instance, when you go shopping for these types of sports shoes, you will find cleats specifically designed for baseball players, others devoted to American football, and still others created for the soccer field.

Buying Cleats for Different Sports

Some of the differences that you will find among the cleats designed for various sports have to do with the length of the spikes on the bottom of the shoes. For example, if you want to buy cleats for American football, you will find that the most of the cleats designed for football have the longest spikes. This is because many of the plays in football require a great deal of extra traction, whereas slightly less traction is required in soccer and baseball (relatively speaking).

Another important point to consider when you go out to buy cleats has to do with what the spikes on the bottoms of the shoes are made out of. For instance, some cleats are made with metal spikes. This may (or may not) be acceptable at certain levels of play and/or in certain leagues. But generally speaking, metal spikes are not considered acceptable in most youth sports.

Cleats for Youth Sports

This means that if you are purchasing cleats for your child or teenager, you will probably not want to buy cleats with metal spikes. (Your particular youth league might have additional restrictions as well, so you will want to know what they are before you go cleats shopping with your child.)

Never buy cleats for yourself (or your child) without trying them on first. They can feel a little stiff at first, so a proper fit is especially important, and wearing them will take some getting used to because the walking on spikes is a strange sensation, especially at first. Don’t wear them around the house. (And make sure that your kids also avoid wearing them around the house.) The spikes can be damaging to all sorts of floor surfaces, including tiles, hardwood, rugs and carpeting.

Shop around a bit before making your purchase because cleats can be quite expensive and you want to make sure you are getting quality shoes for the best possible price. In addition to price checking in your local brick and mortar stores, you can also check pricing online at some online sports retailers.
