General Insurance Information

General insurance information is widely available online and offline. You may be seeking life insurance or car insurance or homeowners insurance or travel insurance or some other kind of general insurance. But whichever particular type of insurance you are contemplating at the moment, you may also have some general insurance questions to which you are seeking some satisfactory answers. This particular article tries to answer some of these basic or general insurance questions so that you have a foundation upon which to build the rest of your insurance knowledge.

For starters, what is insurance and what is it for? This is perhaps the key general insurance question, or the question that most people have at the beginning of their research process when considering various insurance companies. The definition of insurance is as follows: Insurance is a system or a business that insures an individual’s life, property, automobile or some other item against the types of harm or loss that can occur in life (such as a flood, a fire, a vehicular accident, death, unforeseen disability or other situations). The payment from the insurance company is typically in proportion to the type of potential risk or hazard involved.

Dealing with Insurance Companies

An individual (or a business) enters into a contractual agreement with an insurance company in which the individual (or business) pays an agreed upon fee to the insurance company (perhaps on an annual basis or a monthly basis), and in return the insurance company agrees to reimburse the individual or business for any harm or loss that may take place under the specific terms of the contract. (For instance, flood insurance would only cover the types of harm or loss that can take place during a flood.)

Once people feel that they have a solid understanding of what specific types of insurance (and/or general insurance) actually are, the next step in their research process is typically to identify the types of insurance they are seeking. For instance, they may decide that they want to get several different types of insurance (including perhaps homeowners insurance, life insurance and car insurance). Or they may decide that they only want to start with one type of insurance (and perhaps build from there, or perhaps not, depending upon their specific insurance needs). One person’s insurance needs may differ quite a lot from another person's insurance needs, which means that it is important to do your own assessment of your general insurance needs, (and perhaps also to have your spouse and/or other adult family members chime in with their own assessments of the family’s general insurance needs).

Your General Insurance Needs

Once you, perhaps along with your partner or spouse and/or other adult family members, have come up with a combined list of your general insurance needs as a family, you may want to talk to additional relatives and/or friends about specific insurance companies that they have worked with in the past or present. Ask for their frank and honest opinions of these particular insurance companies. (They may even have specific insurance agents within these insurance companies with whom they enjoy working.)

The reason that it can be so helpful to seek out the honest opinions of people you know and trust when it comes to general insurance questions (as well as specific insurance questions) is that the information they provide can give you an excellent starting place in your own quest for general insurance information. In particular, if someone you trust gives you the name of a trustworthy general insurance agent (that is, an insurance agent who handles a lot of different types of insurance), then it might be a good idea to give that particular agent a call to see what you think of him or her.

Of course, this does not mean that you should feel obligated in any way to use the exact same general insurance agent that your trusted friend (or colleague or family member) suggests, but after your own detailed conversation with this general insurance agent, you may find that you do in fact want to become a client of the same general insurance agent that your friend or family member uses.
