Internet Marketing Addiction

Addicted to Internet Marketing

Addiction is a very serious topic. Most often when people think of addiction they think of substance abuse, such as alcohol abuse or illicit drug abuse or prescription drug abuse. Food addiction is another form of addiction that may come to mind. Of course, there are additional forms of behavior that can be considered addictive when engaged in obsessively, such as compulsive gambling. These days, many addiction experts also maintain that gamers who play their video games of choice in an obsessive manner (in some cases, 24/7) can also be considered addicts.

Perhaps the same can be said of Internet Marketing. There are many people who are quite obsessed with the idea of making money online. To get a sense of just how many, all you need to do is conduct a Google search on this topic or any related topic to see just how many blogs and websites there are devoted to the subject. In many ways, you can see why this idea is so popular, as well as why it can become an obsession for so many individuals.

Proceed with Caution

The Internet, as you know, is still relatively new in the greater scheme of things. As soon as people figured out different ways to monetize the time that they spent online, a brand new field (Internet Marketing) was born. As fields go, it is still in its infancy or early childhood, but there are some Internet Marketing “gurus” and leaders in the field who have managed to find ways to become extremely successful at what they do. Some of these gurus have become teachers, passing their knowledge of the Internet Marketing field on to others (typically for a fee, of course).

But as is true with every field, some people will have a natural talent or knack for it, and others will be less successful…but they may keep trying anyway. Internet Marketing can become a problem for people when it becomes an obsession. When defined broadly, an addiction can be any obsessive compulsive behavior that gets out of hand and starts to take over a person’s life, to the detriment of their functioning in both their personal and professional lives.

Making Money Online and Addictive Personalities

Granted, Internet marketing is a fascinating new field. But not everyone who tries their hand at making money online will strike it rich as Internet Marketers. Some will strike gold, while others will just strike out, (which, when you think about it, is exactly what happened with the actual Gold Rush). Whether you are successful or not as an Internet Marketer, if you have reached the point where the idea of making money online is all you think about and all you work on at the expense of everything and everyone else in your life, it might be time to re-examine your priorities and consider changing your behavior.

In other words, if you think you might be struggling with some form of Internet Marketing addiction, it may be time to take a little breather from trying to make money online. It is possible that you might not have to stop completely. Specifically, if you are able to get the behavior well in hand, say by limiting the amount of time you spend online each day, this can be a good step in the right direction. (It might just be a matter of proportion, that is, working out how much time you spend on your Internet Marketing each day in proportion to all of your other daily activities.) Of course, if you think you have an Internet Marketing addiction or obsession for which you might need some professional help, do not hesitate to seek counseling to work through this serious issue.
