Anxiety Is Widespread

Many people throughout the United States and around the world endure excessive amounts of anxiety and stress. In fact, approximately 13% of the general population is struggling with some kind of anxiety disorder at any given time. Even if your anxiety does not rise to the level of a full blown anxiety disorder, it might still be seriously disrupting your life.

If so, you might be interested in learning more about natural anxiety relief, that is, ways to decrease your anxiety naturally and without medication. Fortunately, there are several proven, non-medical ways to reduce anxiety. (Of course, with that said, if you feel like your anxiety is taking over your life, you probably want to speak to a professional mental health clinician about this issue.)

Life Stressors

First, try to identify your primary stressors in life. In other words, what specific factors in your life are causing you to feel stressed out all the time? If you can get a handle on precisely what is causing you to feel the most stress and anxiety. If you can reduce or eliminate certain stressors in your life, this can go a long way toward reducing your anxiety level.

Of course, not all stressors can simply be removed from your life. For instance, if your main stressor is your job, it is not likely that you can simply cut your job out of your life. However, there may be some changes you can make at work that will make going to your job slightly less stressful. Little changes can go a long way toward making you feel better.

Another way to reduce your stress level is to distract yourself from thinking about things that send your anxiety level through the roof. For instance, if you find yourself in a downward mental spiral thinking about certain things that bother you, force yourself to do something you enjoy (like gardening or reading a good book or catching a movie) for a while so that you can stop spinning your mental wheels and “get out of your own way,” emotionally speaking.

The Power of Healthy Distractions

Try not to worry about what you cannot control. A lot of people who struggle with mild, moderate or even severe anxiety find themselves worrying about things that are beyond their control, such as changes in weather conditions or what their bosses might do next that could upset them. But we cannot control things like the weather or the behavior of other individuals so it is not worth our while to worry about such matters.

When you find yourself worrying about matters that are well beyond your control, this can be a good time to distract yourself with an activity you enjoy. Reading a good novel can be a great distraction when you are feeling anxious because you can get absorbed in the trials and tribulations of the characters and forget about your own for a while.
