48Resume as Sales Pitch
Whether you are seeking an office job or a work at home job or any kind of job, you need to spend time perfecting your resume and polishing it as much as possible. Envision your resume as you “sales pitch.” It should describe all of your best professional qualities and experiences. This means you need to make absolutely certain that it is free of any spelling or grammatical errors.
Stand Out
You want to stand out from the pack, but you don’t want to embellish or tell any untruths, as you will inevitably get caught. Think about it this way: If you and another candidate have a similar set of skills and professional experiences, but if your resume contains mistakes (that could have been avoided) and the other candidates does not, who do you think is going to snag the interview (or even the job itself)?
Resume Format
You may want to use the Arial font when it comes to formatting. (Times New Roman is also acceptable.) These fonts are both very clear and clean looking. Don’t create a flashy resume with lots of different colors, as that looks unprofessional and can make you come across as immature and not serious. You want to dazzle any potential employers with your actual job experiences, not with your ink color choices.
Professional Resume Writers
These days, a lot of potential employers accept resumes via email, so you need to be certain that your resume looks clean and professional when printed out and/or when viewed on a computer screen. Should you consult a professional resume writer? Well, that all depends. You may want a few other people to review your resume (and to give you honest, professional feedback), and perhaps you have such people in your life. If not, you may want to consider hiring a professional resume writer to help you. A lot of them charge reasonable rates and you can think of hiring such an individual as an investment in your career.
One Page Resume or Two?
What about the old “one page resume rule? This rule is now considered outdated by many resume writing professionals. If you are young and do not have a lot of experience, it is probably a good idea to keep your resume down to one page. However, if you have a fair bit of professional experience under your belt, it is acceptable to write a resume that is one and a half or two pages in length, because you may want to include some additional categories besides your professional and educational background, such as your professional affiliations, any professional achievements and/or awards, your volunteer experiences, etc. (Remember, a resume is different from a C.V. or curriculum vitae, which is what academic professionals typically use, and which tend to be much longer, in order to include every single publication citation, every speech/presentation, etc.)
